Blackdown Farm Vets – Farm walk and Discussion ‘Be prepared for Turnout’

We held our first Farm walk and discussion of 2022 on Tuesday 8th February at North Waterhayne Farm as guests of Jim and Lorna Burdge. We were joined by over 50 of our clients and discussed issues relevant to turning out cattle, due to the spring period looming fast.

Following the farm walk and a very open introduction by Jim and Lorna of their farm, their approach to managing their seasonal calving, grass based dairy herd and their milk vending facility “Daisy’s Dairy“, we split into 3 smaller discussion groups that rotated after each talk.

Blackdown Farm Vets’ Tom Laycock discussed the dangers of Leptospirosis, which can be life threatening to humans, so it is imperative that our clients completely understand the way this disease works and its prevention. MSD Vet Liz Creswell reviewed Lungworm and the benefits of Husk Vac vaccination in reducing the threat of anthelmintic resistance. Finally, Rachael Collins from APHA Starcross detailed tick-borne diseases and the best methods of prevention.

Our Vet team was on hand throughout the day giving Client’s a chance to discuss the day’s topics and allowed an informal setting to cover any other matters. It was great to see our Clients talking and sharing.

We will be holding further events in the near future and look forward to welcoming you.
